This is a four-unit housing development situated in a newly emerging residential area near Nagoya. The project reexamines the relationship between the city and residential units, creating a refined streetscape and a deep approach space through the continuous arrangement of a welcoming gate and layered walls across all units. These elements define an intermediate zone that seamlessly integrates the exterior and interior spaces, achieving both openness and privacy. The design actively incorporates external spaces while ensuring a sense of seclusion.
A series of human-scaled welcoming gates along the front road establish a unified atmosphere across the neighborhood. The intermediate zone created by these gates extends beyond just serving as parking areas or courtyards, functioning as a livable extension of the residences. The approach, framed by rows of black bamboo, conceals the entrance from direct view to enhance privacy. Slitted partitions along the site’s perimeter soften the boundary, subtly transmitting movement, light, and greenery while preventing a sense of enclosure. At night, the gate structures are illuminated by upward lighting, further integrating the exterior design into the overall urban fabric.
The project name, Bruno City, is inspired by the historical background of Nisshin City, which was named after the cruiser Nisshin, originally built in Genoa, Italy, as Moreno for the Argentine Navy. "Bruno," meaning robustness, serves as the design motif, expressed through a combination of earthy-toned tiles and white surfaces that evoke the refined atmosphere of Genoa. The welcoming gate and layered walls aim to appeal to a design-conscious younger generation, fostering a dynamic and vibrant community.
