The design of this project was inspired by a native pine forest located on the site. In January 2023, equipped with aerial photography equipment, I trekked to the site and was immediately drawn to a small stand of pines on the hillside, dramatically set against a backdrop of extensive, faded grassland. Only after discussing with the client did I realize that this was the parcel designated for our design. Despite the desolate season, the sight of the pine forest on the slope evoked poetic imagery akin to "moonlight filtering through the pines, spring water trickling over stones." This pine forest, rich with the memories of the site, is the heart around which we intend to craft a secluded mountain retreat, a place for contemplation and healing of the spirit. The project's design centers around preserving the native pine forest, meaning that the elevation of this particular area remains largely unchanged. We decided to align the main pathway's elevation with that of the pine forest, using it as a reference to manage the elevation differences throughout the site, thus ensuring the pine forest's natural habitat is perfectly maintained. With the pine as a cultural anchor, we are incorporating traditional Chinese landscape elements such as rocks, waterfalls, and courtyards to create a poetic Chinese-style cemetery. This design is rooted deeply in Eastern aesthetics, which resonate with the innate romanticism of the Eastern soul. For the project's functional retaining walls, we opted for dry-stacked, locally sourced natural boulders, which significantly reduce both construction and transportation costs. We preserved the large, existing trees on the site as part of our design. By adapting to and planning around the natural terrain, we are not only maximizing the use of the land's unique features but also significantly reducing construction expenses. Through a strategic selection of tree and flower species, we are crafting a beautiful sanctuary for life.
