SN HOUSE / Home with Converging Light is a renovation project located on the 12th floor of a tower residence in Nagoya, Japan. The corner unit offers sweeping views through continuous full-height glazing, yet its original layout—divided into three small rooms—failed to embrace the openness that was its greatest asset.
The design transforms the space through the concept of a minimalistic “convergence of light.” Partition walls were removed wherever possible, creating a continuous living environment enriched by carefully orchestrated illumination. Vertical light elements in wall corners, combined with soft ambient light amplified by mirrors, gently embrace the space. Curtains serve as flexible partitions that both divide and connect, their form-retaining drapes catching and enhancing the light to elevate the atmosphere.
Functional continuity is reinforced by replacing closet and storage doors with full-height curtains, while walls finished in subtly textured tiles interact with line lighting to create depth and refinement. Custom-made furniture in a black palette unifies the interior, while strategically placed mirrors expand spatial perception. Tall foliage plants introduce refreshing natural accents that complement the ceiling height.
The washroom features a sculptural basin framed by vertical line lights, establishing a luxurious focal point. In the bathroom, 600mm porcelain tiles and precise detailing of joints and equipment create a sense of tension, enhanced by ambient ceiling lighting and narrow downlights.
Through these methods, various qualities of light converge to generate subtle contrasts—between openness and intimacy, softness and sharpness—crafting a serene and timeless living environment. SN HOUSE / Home with Converging Light demonstrates the transformative potential of thoughtful spatial intervention, offering a sophisticated and poetic reinterpretation of urban apartment living.
