Home is more than a shelter; it is a vessel for time. As Japanese architect Tadao Ando once noted, “The real challenge is to create spaces that resonate emotionally with people.” This project revitalizes a nearly 50-year-old apartment and courtyard—a legacy from the client’s grandfather where every brick carries the resonance of family memory. Through a meticulous process of spatial recalibration, the renovation breathes new life into the structure without erasing its soul.
Located on the ground floor of an aging residential block, the 80-square-meter interior was once stifled by a fragmented, dark layout. Rigid boundaries were dismantled, replaced by fluted glass sliding doors and a social bar counter. This creates a "bright-fluid-generous" atmosphere where light circulates freely across clean-lined planes. Reorganized circulation now encourages daily interaction between the residents and the shifting qualities of natural daylight, balancing emotional continuity with the flexibility of a modern residence.
Beyond the interior, the building’s aging façade underwent a phased structural restoration. Deteriorating walls were repaired and reclad in weather-resistant stone and low-maintenance coatings, enhancing durability while refining the streetscape. Strategic architectural interventions were made to prioritize ventilation, daylight penetration, and long-term comfort, fostering a renewed dialogue between the home and its surroundings.
Materiality serves as the bridge between eras. A tactile palette of solid timber, marble, fair-faced concrete, and perforated brick is balanced with modern steel grilles and integrated LED lighting. Rooted in sustainability, the design utilizes low-pollutant, recyclable, and low-formaldehyde materials. The result is an enduring sanctuary that honors ancestral roots while embracing a contemporary, eco-conscious way of living.
