THE LEHUO in Tainan’s Jiufenzi Redevelopment Area, Jiufenzi Co-Living Residence is a 12-story residential building with 2 basement levels, spanning 4,098.17㎡ of floor area and housing 33 units. Guided by the principle that “architecture responds to nature,” the design employs a restrained, honest aesthetic, integrating passive energy strategies, sustainable materials, and human-centric spaces to create a modern residence that harmonizes with Taiwan’s tropical climate and its inhabitants.
Tailored to Tainan’s hot, humid conditions, the project achieves a natural daylight index of 0.76 and ventilation potential of 0.35, exceeding standards to ensure indoor comfort while minimizing energy use. The façade, clad in expanded metal mesh, provides shading, privacy, and visual rhythm, with light and shadow animating its temporal and spatial presence. Eschewing ornate decoration, the design embraces material honesty and structural clarity for timeless beauty.
The landscape integrates permeable paving, water-retention gardens, and native vegetation, leveraging micro-topography to manage rainwater and regulate microclimates, enhancing urban ecological resilience. Sustainable features—solar panels, energy-efficient elevators, double-layered low-E glass, thermal insulation bricks, and smart sensors—coupled with lightweight partitions and exposed piping, optimize construction efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
Jiufenzi Co-Living Residence is a thoughtful response to tropical urban living, rejecting formalism in favor of environmental responsibility and architectural essence. It is not merely a residence but a solution to the challenges of climate change and urban density.
