Aesthetics is an objective discipline, but its appreciation greatly varies across generations and perspectives. This project explores the overarching nature of aesthetics: how a family of four, each with distinct preferences and interests, can share a space that is shaped through subtle details, balanced atmospheres, and emotional resonance. Inspired by the warm simplicity of the homeowners’ art collection, the design investigates the connection between the occupants and the living space, particularly through the color and light.
At the dark-toned foyer, the combination of mirror and glass cabinetry alleviates the sense of confinement. As the sightline moves inwards, a sense of spaciousness is disclosed: The glass curtain wall along the building’s exterior conjoins various living corners, offering abundant daylight. On the main wall, soft matte beige Italian marble establishes a calm and composed backdrop. White curtain sheers diffuse harsh sunlight, soften the glare, and suffuse an undertone of relaxation and tranquility. A brown leather sofa paired with a walnut bookshelf forms the wife’s cozy reading corner; whereas a charcoal-toned armchair for the husband complements the dark stone steps, leading to a private nook hidden behind the main wall. Catering to the needs and the independence of growing children, each personal room is cohesively integrated yet distinct from each other, expressing their individual character.
By the side wall, a row of dark cabinetry defines the spatial boundaries, and glass doors reflect moments of daily life. Contrasting to the minimal elegance of the wall, the dining tabletop’s marble veins spread out, layering texture and visuality, forming a material interplay composed of multidimensional relationships, rather than a singular combination. When lighting meets colors and materials at the right balance, the space reveals a rhythmic sequence of movement and stillness, shadow and light, resonating a warm and artful lifestyle.
