Yanghang People’s Market is located in Yangxin Community, Yanghang Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai, surrounded by a dense residential neighborhood and major local roads. The project occupies a 6,300㎡site with a total floor area of 7,567㎡, and is conceived as an inclusive civic space that responds to the everyday needs of the community. In line with planning requirements, the project integrates an approximately 3,000㎡ fresh market together with community-oriented retail and supporting facilities.
As a key architectural practice of the “People’s City” concept, the design seeks to revive the authentic urban vitality of Shanghai’s market culture while integrating seamlessly into contemporary urban living. The market is envisioned as a social condenser that resonates with the city’s historical context, provides accessible green activity spaces, and safeguards essential daily services for the community. Amid the intensity of modern life, it offers residents a place where tranquility and liveliness coexist—a market that truly belongs to the people of Shanghai. The architectural strategy is structured around four core concepts: a grid-based modular system; three spatial centers that organize dynamic and quiet activities; a surrounding Qilou arcade that forms a continuous, weather-protected street market; and triple-tier setbacks that shape an urban green core.
In a neighborhood currently lacking public greenery, the project introduces an arcaded street market, layered green terraces, and modular volumes to foster a healthier and more sustainable community environment. Through the arcade and open platforms, the design creates shaded, well-ventilated public spaces for rest, gathering, and daily interaction, while establishing an active and harmonious dialogue between the architecture and its surrounding urban fabric.
