The core concept of "Threshold Boatworks" reimagines a traditional boatbuilding facility as a vibrant civic landmark and an illuminated "light box" that actively mediates the spatial boundary between land and water. Located in downtown Manteo, North Carolina, directly beside the historic lighthouse, the project is designed to celebrate the region's legacy of wooden boatbuilding while simultaneously activating the public waterfront.
Primary inspiration was drawn from the natural context of the site, which is bounded by marshland to the west and open water to the south, specifically focusing on the rhythmic, fluid dynamics of ocean waves. This inspiration is physically manifested in the building's main façade, which features undulating wood panels that reinterpret local timber craft. As sunlight interacts with these rhythmic surfaces throughout the day, it casts shifting patterns of shadow that echo the dynamic movement of the surrounding water.
A key strength of the project lies in its site-specific massing and circulation strategy. By placing the boat workshop perpendicular to the main building along the water's edge, the design defines a clear boardwalk circulation path and opens up generous public gathering spaces right on the waterfront. Furthermore, the central "light box" acts as both a welcoming threshold and an illuminated beacon welcoming visitors onto the site. Ultimately, the project's unique innovation is its ability to transform familiar, traditional materials into a highly contemporary architectural expression of community, craft, and place.
