In Ningbo, eastern terminus of the Maritime Silk Road, this project reinterprets alcohol's cultural symbolism as a medium for cross-cultural dialogue. Guided by “Dissolving Temporal Divides, Performing Cultural Synthesis,” the design weaves maritime heritage, mythology, and Eastern and Western artistic traditions into an immersive spatial narrative.

Curvilinear forms shape a fluid, exploratory spatial experience. Functional elements become symbolic installations: banquettes as ceremonial dragon boats, partitions as stylized wings, and a mast-and-sail gateway evoking nautical voyages. The journey begins in a dim transitional lounge with weathered beast-head door knockers, leading into layered spaces where dragon boat motifs, Nian beast carvings, sun drum windows, and dragon-scale bar counters construct a mythic narrative of exploration, catastrophe, and enlightenment. Dunhuang-inspired imagery dialogues with Escher-like tessellations, forging aesthetic tension between Eastern mysticism and Western surrealism.

Sustainability is embedded as strategy and storytelling. Reclaimed timber, oxidized door rings, salvaged wood carvings, and vintage crates become primary spatial elements—from dragon boat seating to coffee table plinths. Rather than commercialized luxury materials, the design adopts a zero-waste philosophy, treating each reclaimed artifact as a temporal fragment to be reconfigured and reanimated. This approach minimizes waste while reinforcing conceptual continuity between past and present.

Through reinterpreting cultural archetypes and adaptively reusing historical materials, the space transcends conventional hospitality typologies. It becomes a living archive—an immersive theatre where commerce, ritual, mythology, and alchemical imagination converge—inviting visitors on a trans-temporal journey dissolving cultural and geographic boundaries.
