Perched on the slope of Yakushima’s mountains, Kikori Yakushima is a vacation villa suspended between forest, mountain, and sea. From within, guests look upward into the dense cedar canopy and downward toward the ocean horizon—an amplified vertical relationship that shapes both the architecture and the pace of stay.
Inspired by the annual rings of a tree, the villa unfolds as layered spaces revealed gradually over time. Rather than a static object, it becomes a vessel that quietly records moments of rest, reflection, and presence through threshold, light, and framed views.
The concept emerges from close observation of Yakushima’s cedar forests. In nutrient-poor granite terrain and constant rainfall, yakusugi grow exceptionally slowly, forming dense rings and enduring for millennia. Historically prized for their durability, many were harvested and shipped to the mainland from the late 16th century through the Edo period, while irregular, twisted trees were often left standing—allowing icons like the Jōmon Cedar to endure.
Kikori Yakushima honors this culture through contemporary quiet luxury—inviting guests to slow down between ancient forest and open sea.
