This renovation project breathes new life into a detached house that has stood for over fifty years. To achieve this transformation, the design team employed three key strategies: “subtraction,” “color differentiation,” and “focal points.” Firstly, by removing the dark and damp tatami room as well as the study, which was unfortunately infested with termites, the team was able to reduce the building's footprint. This thoughtful subtraction not only eliminated problem areas but also allowed natural light and fresh air to flow freely throughout the space once again. Moreover, the introduction of a courtyard serves as an inviting buffer between the interior and exterior areas, enhancing the overall connection to nature.
The exterior of the building boldly departs from conventional renovations, embracing a striking palette of deep gray-blue matte paint that replaces the typical white tones. This contemporary choice is elegantly complemented by dark metallic tiles, creating a sophisticated façade. In the presence of natural light, the interplay between metallic reflections and the shadows cast by surrounding trees not only enhances the architectural features but also invites a profound sense of depth and dimension. Upon entering, residents are greeted by vivid accent walls that artistically define each space, serving as visual cues that aid elderly residents in navigating their pathways with ease. Moreover, the courtyards at both the front and rear of the building have been thoughtfully preserved, allowing for window views that beautifully frame the gentle sway of the surrounding foliage.
The TV wall captivates with striking marbled tiles that resemble delicate ink wash paintings, serving as a compelling visual focal point that enhances the overall aesthetic of the space. The bathroom boldly showcases black-and-white ink wash tiles, thoughtfully paired with sophisticated dark green lighting.
